This is a story of me getting a tanned bottom for misbehaving in Tesco, a well-known supermarket in the UK, by my mum in the early 1990s. I was about 7 or 8 at the time, can’t remember exactly what age. Basically, my mum was a firm believer in corporal punishment for me and my three sisters growing up.
This certain day, I was in a foul mood all day and being mischievous throughout the day. My mother decided we were going food shopping to the supermarket. I hated food shopping, and my mum knew this. Anyway, in the shop I was being a brat. I knocked stuff off the shelfs and was being rude to my siblings and other adults in the shop.
After a few warnings throughout the day, my mum had had enough. She dragged me by the hair and took me down one of the quiet aisles, and she tanned my bum about six times. She warned me that when I got home I was going to get a good hiding on the bare bottom. She had smacked me with my leggings still on in Tesco. I was crying in the shop and I’m sure a few customers saw me getting it, but they said nothing to my mother cause they probably saw I deserved it.
I behaved in the shop the rest of the time we were there, and my older sister, Lucy, teased me in the supermarket, saying, “Mum is going to leather you when you get home, you brat. I don’t know why you behave like this cause you know mum will give you a leathering.”
That night, when we got home, when mum had finished putting the shopping away she told me to go to my room and wait because she hadn’t finished with me.
She said: “Abby, you are getting leathered, hen.”
She didn’t lie either. That night, I got blistered when she gave me the slipper. I cried all night. It was one of my worst hidings. We had a good mother, looking back now. I deserved every leathering I got.
